About Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can be used to help with all sorts of problems of a psychosomatic or emotional origin.  It can be effectively used in therapy designed to enable individuals to overcome fears and phobias, or to change the way they behave, eg. To stop habits such as smoking, overeating or nail-biting.  Hypnotherapy helps people with matters of mental health, anxiety related disorders or emotional problems including stress, anxiety and depression.

Hypnotherapy can not only help to overcome negative symptoms and emotions but can be extremely powerful in helping you to enhance and build the positive such as increased calmness and wellbeing, goal setting and achievement, improved sports performance and much more.

Hypnosis itself is a natural phenomenon and those who experience the hypnotic trance find it to be a very relaxing and pleasant experience.  The relaxation experienced makes it easier for individuals to talk about emotive issues.  However - simply to bring someone into the hypnotic state and then to bring them out again will not ‘cure’ or solve anything – it is only the therapy that is done that has any effect.  Hypnosis facilitates quicker, more direct and effective therapy.

Hypnosis

What does it feel like to be hypnotised?  Well in actual fact there’s no such thing as a hypnotised feeling.  It varies from person to person; everyone however finds it to be a very relaxing and pleasant experience.  You never lose control during hypnosis.  As you are laying there you know that should you wish to you could simply open your eyes and end the session but the truth is its so nice laying there feeling so relaxed that you simply can’t be bothered.  You never lose consciousness during a session. However one of the effects of the hypnotic state is that after a while you mind quite naturally starts to wander – whilst it is wandering you may not consciously hear what the therapist is saying but you are fully aware and often when prompted you can recall most of a session.  Many people liken the hypnotic state to the moments just before you wake up, when your mind wakes up first and is hyper alert but your body remains wonderfully relaxed.

Different forms of Therapy

Joanne uses two principle types of therapy depending on the nature of the presenting problem, Suggestion therapy and Analytical therapy (sometimes called Hypno-analysis).  The most appropriate and effective course of treatment will be decided and discussed at the initial consultation*.

Suggestion Therapy

Suggestion therapy gives positive suggestions and is used to motivate individuals to achieve desired changes.  This type of therapy is ideal for the simpler types of problem such as smoking, nail biting, pre-test nerves, slimming, relaxation, confidence boosting etc, and most require only one or two sessions with perhaps a booster later on. Analytical Therapy

Analytical therapy operates on the doctrine of cause and effect – it is a longer process averaging 8 weekly sessions and seeks out the root cause of problems, or symptoms eliminating them, thereby eliminating the associated problems or symptoms.  More information
