Symptom Substitution

The therapy that Joanne offers works on the doctrine of cause and effect.  This is the belief that for every symptom experienced - either physical or emotional, there is a reason or a cause, ie; the mind or body is trying to get rid of something unneccessary, perhaps some underlying anxiety, (something inside oneself but outside of your control).  This reason or cause must be eradicated to cure the symptom.  With certain problems suggestion therapy may be enough to change an individuals behaviour or thought patterns for long enough for the changes to become habitual and effectively permanent... for example giving up smoking, stopping nail biting, etc.  But because any suggestions given during therapy wear off after a period of time, there are occasions where symptoms may reappear, either in their original form or maybe in the form of a new symptom as the brain and body try once again to get rid of the cause in some way.

For example, where a client attends in order to stop a nail biting habit where that habit is caused by an underlying anxiety, suggestion therapy will stop the habit in the short term but after the effects of the suggestions wear off some time later, maybe months or a year, the underlying anxiety will need to find some way to dissipate and the individual may find that they resume the habit or may notice they develop headaches or a nervous rash or similar as a substituted symptom.
